If your website is slow and you’ve already optimised your images, upgraded your hosting, and minified your CSS, the culprit is almost certainly third-party scripts. They’re the single biggest performance drain we see on mid-market B2B websites, and most teams don’t even know which ones are running on their site, let alone how much damage they’re doing.

A third-party script is any JavaScript that loads from a domain you don’t control. Your analytics platform, your chatbot widget, your tracking pixels, your A/B testing tool, your social media embeds, your cookie consent banner, your CRM integration, your retargeting tags. Each one arrives with its own payload, its own network requests, and its own execution cost. Individually, most are small enough to seem harmless. Collectively, they routinely account for 50-80% of total page weight and execution time on the sites we audit.

The frustrating part is that these scripts were all added for good reasons. Someone in marketing needed conversion tracking. Someone in sales wanted live chat. Someone in leadership asked for heatmaps. Over months and years, the scripts accumulate. Nobody removes the old ones. Nobody measures the performance cost of the new ones. And your site gets slower in a way that’s almost invisible to the people making those decisions.

Why Third-Party Scripts Hurt Performance So Badly

To understand why third-party scripts are so destructive to page speed, you need to understand how browsers load and render pages. When a browser encounters a script tag, it has to decide: can I keep building the page while this loads, or do I need to stop and wait? Even with modern loading strategies like async and defer, JavaScript still has to be downloaded, parsed, compiled, and executed. Every one of those steps costs time and consumes resources on your visitor’s device.

But the real problem with third-party scripts goes deeper than raw file size. Here’s what makes them uniquely harmful.

They trigger chain requests

A single analytics tag doesn’t just load one file. It loads an initial script, which then requests a configuration file, which then loads additional modules, which then fire tracking pixels. We’ve seen a single tag manager container load 15-20 subsequent requests before it finishes executing. Each of those requests requires a DNS lookup, a TCP connection, and a TLS handshake to a server you don’t control. That’s networking overhead you can’t optimise away with better hosting or a faster CDN, because the requests are going to someone else’s infrastructure.

They compete for the main thread

Browsers run JavaScript on a single thread. While a third-party script is executing, your page can’t respond to user input. It can’t paint new content. It can’t animate a menu opening. This is the direct cause of poor Interaction to Next Paint (INP) scores, which Google now uses as a Core Web Vital. When a visitor clicks your “Request a Demo” button and nothing happens for 300 milliseconds because a heatmap script is processing, you’ve created a frustrating experience that costs you conversions.

They’re unpredictable

You control your own code. You can optimise it, cache it, deploy it from your preferred CDN. Third-party scripts are a black box. The vendor can push an update at any time that doubles the script’s size or changes its behaviour. Their servers can slow down during peak traffic. They can add new tracking calls without telling you. We’ve seen client sites where a single vendor’s script update added 400ms to load time overnight, and nobody noticed for weeks because the change happened on the vendor’s side.

They delay critical rendering

Many third-party scripts inject visible elements into the page: chat widgets, cookie banners, social proof notifications, embedded forms. These injected elements can cause layout shifts that destroy your Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) score. They can also block or delay the rendering of your actual content, pushing your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) later. When a cookie consent banner takes 1.2 seconds to render and shifts your hero section down by 80 pixels, that’s a measurable hit to two of three Core Web Vitals from a single script.

The Usual Suspects: Scripts We Find On Almost Every Audit

When our team audits a mid-market B2B site, we typically find between 12 and 30 third-party scripts running on the homepage. Many of these are duplicates, remnants of old campaigns, or tools nobody on the current team even uses. Here are the categories that cause the most damage.

Tag managers deserve their own mention because they’re both essential and dangerous. Google Tag Manager itself is relatively lightweight, but it’s a vehicle for loading an unlimited number of other scripts. In the wrong hands, a tag manager becomes a way for anyone with login credentials to add scripts to the site without involving development. We’ve audited sites where marketing had added 40+ tags over two years, including multiple competing analytics platforms and retargeting pixels for campaigns that ended long ago.

Analytics and tracking platforms are the most common scripts we find. Google Analytics, HubSpot tracking, Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, Microsoft Clarity, Hotjar, Mixpanel. It’s not unusual to find four or five of these running simultaneously. Each one costs roughly 50-150ms of execution time on a mid-range mobile device. Stack five of them and you’ve burned through half a second before your visitor has even seen your page content.

Live chat and chatbot widgets are among the heaviest individual scripts. A typical chat widget loads 200-500KB of JavaScript, plus fonts, CSS, and often iframe content. On many B2B sites, the chat widget is the single largest script on the page, yet it’s used by fewer than 2% of visitors. You’re making the experience worse for 98% of your audience to serve a feature most of them will never touch.

A/B testing and personalisation tools are particularly insidious because they often need to load before the page renders. If the tool loads after the page is visible, visitors might see a flash of the original content before the variation appears. To prevent this, these scripts are typically render-blocking by design. That means your entire page waits for the testing platform’s server to respond before anything appears on screen.

Social media embeds bring entire application frameworks with them. Embedding a Twitter feed, a YouTube video, or an Instagram post doesn’t just load the content; it loads the platform’s JavaScript, CSS, fonts, and tracking. A single embedded YouTube video, loaded the default way, adds roughly 800KB to your page. Three embedded videos on a case studies page and you’ve added over 2MB of third-party resources.

How To Measure The Real Cost

You can’t fix what you can’t see. The first step is understanding exactly which scripts are running on your site and how much each one costs. Here’s how we approach this in our projects.

Chrome DevTools Network tab is your starting point. Load your page with the Network tab open, filter by “JS”, and sort by domain. Everything that isn’t your own domain is a third-party script. Note the transfer size, the time to load, and the number of subsequent requests each script triggers. Pay particular attention to scripts that appear early in the waterfall, as these have the greatest impact on perceived load time.

Chrome DevTools Performance tab tells you something even more important: how long each script takes to execute. A script might be only 30KB to download but take 200ms to parse and run. Record a performance trace, then look at the “Main” thread flame chart. Third-party scripts will show up as long tasks (anything over 50ms) that block interactivity. This is where you’ll find the real cost.

WebPageTest provides a detailed waterfall view and can show you the full chain of requests triggered by each script. Run a test on a mid-range mobile device with a 4G connection to see what your actual visitors experience, not what your fibre-connected laptop shows you. The “Requests” view lets you filter by third-party domains, and the “JavaScript Execution” breakdown shows exactly which scripts are consuming the most CPU time.

For an ongoing view, Google’s CrUX data (available through PageSpeed Insights or Search Console) shows real-user Core Web Vitals. If your lab scores look decent but your field data is poor, third-party scripts are almost always the reason. Lab tests often undercount third-party impact because they don’t capture the variability of real-world conditions: slow vendor servers, ad auction delays, consent management latency.

Removing scripts isn’t just a technical decision. It’s a business decision. Every third-party script was added to serve a purpose, and removing it means either losing that capability or finding a lighter alternative. Here’s the framework we use with clients to make these decisions systematically.

For every script on the site, answer three questions:

  • Is anyone actively using the data or functionality this script provides? Not “could someone use it” but “is someone actually looking at this data or relying on this feature right now, this month?”
  • What is the measured performance cost? Document the download size, execution time, and number of network requests.
  • Is there a lighter alternative that achieves the same outcome? Self-hosted analytics, facade patterns for embeds, server-side tracking instead of client-side pixels.

When you run through this exercise honestly, you’ll typically find that 30-50% of scripts can be removed entirely because nobody is using the data they collect or the tool has been superseded by something else. Another 20-30% can be loaded more efficiently through deferred loading, facade patterns, or replacement with lighter alternatives. The remaining scripts are genuinely needed and worth their performance cost.

This prioritisation work is something we address early in every project. Once you’ve decided which scripts to keep, there are concrete techniques to minimise their performance cost. These aren’t theoretical suggestions; they’re approaches our team implements on production sites regularly.

Load scripts after user interaction

Most third-party scripts don’t need to run on page load. Chat widgets can load when a visitor scrolls past the fold or hovers over the chat icon. Video embeds can show a static thumbnail until the visitor clicks play. Analytics can wait until after the page is interactive. This technique, sometimes called the facade pattern, replaces a heavy embed with a lightweight placeholder that loads the real script only when needed. For YouTube embeds, this alone saves 500-800KB per video on initial page load.

Self-host what you can

Some scripts, like Google Analytics or common font libraries, can be self-hosted. When you host the script on your own domain, you eliminate the DNS lookup and connection setup to the third-party server. You also gain control over caching headers, can serve the script from your CDN, and avoid the risk of the third party’s server being slow. Self-hosting Google Analytics (through a local copy synced periodically) typically saves 100-200ms on the critical path.

Use resource hints strategically

For scripts that must load from external domains, dns-prefetch and preconnect hints tell the browser to start the DNS lookup and connection setup early, before the script tag is encountered. This doesn’t reduce the total work, but it overlaps the networking with other activity so the script is ready faster when it’s needed. Add preconnect hints only for domains you’re certain will be requested; unnecessary hints waste connections.

Implement proper async and defer attributes

Every third-party script tag should have either async or defer. Without these attributes, the browser stops parsing HTML, downloads the script, executes it, and only then continues building the page. Async downloads the script in parallel and executes it as soon as it’s ready. Defer downloads in parallel but waits to execute until HTML parsing is complete. For most third-party scripts, defer is the better choice because it doesn’t interrupt rendering. Async is appropriate for scripts that need to run early but don’t depend on the DOM, such as analytics beacons.

Audit your tag manager regularly

If you’re using Google Tag Manager, schedule a quarterly audit. Open the container, review every tag, and ask: is this tag active? Is someone using the data? Does the trigger make sense? We commonly find tags that fire on every page when they only need to fire on specific conversion pages, tags for platforms the company no longer uses, and duplicate tags that send the same data twice. A well-maintained GTM container with 8-10 tags performs dramatically differently from a neglected one with 35.

Move tracking server-side where possible

Server-side tracking shifts the processing from your visitor’s browser to your server. Instead of loading a Facebook Pixel on the client and letting it make its own requests, your server sends the conversion data directly to Facebook’s API. The visitor’s browser never sees the script. This approach requires more technical setup, but it eliminates client-side JavaScript entirely for those tracking use cases. It also tends to produce more reliable data because it’s not affected by ad blockers or browser privacy features.

The Compounding Problem: Why It Gets Worse Over Time

One of the most common patterns we see is a site that was reasonably fast at launch but has slowed down significantly over 12-24 months. The codebase hasn’t changed much. The images are the same. The hosting is the same. What changed is the accumulation of third-party scripts added after launch.

This happens because adding a script is easy and the cost is distributed. When marketing adds a new tracking pixel, the site gets 80ms slower. Nobody notices 80ms. Three months later, they add a heatmap tool. Another 120ms. Then sales requests a new chat widget. Another 300ms. Then someone adds a cookie consent platform because of regulatory requirements. Another 200ms. Within a year, the site is 700ms slower than it was at launch. The performance budget has been blown, and no single person made a decision that felt unreasonable.

This is why governance matters as much as initial optimisation. Without a process for evaluating and approving new scripts, every website will get slower over time. In our projects, we establish a simple rule: no script goes on the site without a measured performance impact assessment and an identified owner who’s responsible for its ongoing necessity. When someone leaves the company or a campaign ends, their scripts get reviewed and removed.

What Fast B2B Sites Actually Look Like

The best-performing B2B sites we’ve worked on share a few characteristics worth noting. They typically run fewer than 8 third-party scripts on any given page. They use a tag manager, but it’s tightly governed with clear ownership. They load chat widgets and video embeds on interaction, not on page load. They’ve moved conversion tracking server-side where possible. And they review their script inventory at least quarterly.

These sites consistently achieve LCP under 2 seconds, INP under 100 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.05 in real-user data. They rank better in organic search because Google’s page experience signals reward fast sites. They convert better because visitors aren’t waiting for the page to become interactive. And they cost less to maintain because there are fewer moving parts to debug when something breaks.

The difference between a slow B2B site and a fast one usually isn’t better code or fancier hosting. It’s fewer, better-managed third-party scripts. That’s it. It sounds simple, and technically it is. The hard part is the organisational discipline to keep it that way.

Where To Start This Week

Open your site in Chrome, press F12, go to the Network tab, and filter by “JS”. Count the third-party domains. If you see more than ten distinct external domains loading JavaScript on your homepage, you have a problem worth fixing. Copy the list into a spreadsheet, identify who added each script and why, and start the conversation about what’s still earning its place. That single exercise, done honestly, will tell you more about why your site is slow than any number of speed test scores ever could.
